Waxing 101

Tuesday, July 05, 2011

When it comes to bikini wax, there are a lot of questions.  What are my options?  Will it hurt?  Maybe I’ll just stick to shaving.

This month, I’m going to remove the curtain and tell you everything you need to know about “downtown” waxing.  Here are answers to the most common questions about waxes.

1.    What exactly is a bikini wax?

It is a form of hair removal down there. It will remove the entire hair from the follicle, using a warm wax on the skin. Whether it is with a soft wax (with cloth) or a hard wax, (without cloth), it will pull the hair out by the root and the skin will be left very smooth.

2.    What can I do to alleviate the pain?

Getting a bikini wax may not be too comfortable, especially if it’s your first time. You may take 1 or 2 Ibuprofen 30 minutes before your appointment.  On the day of your wax, it’s best to avoid anything with caffeine, as it can increase sensitivity. There is also a numbing cream named “non scream cream” from Relax & Wax that you can apply 40 minutes before your wax. The active ingredient is benzocaine, which is the safest numbing around the bikini area.  After the first time, it gets much better if you don’t shave in between Waxing. The hair will be thinner than the first time.

3.    When is the right time to get waxed?

If you shave or use a hair removal cream, wait at least two weeks.  Having the hair at a length about ¼ inch is ideal for waxing.

4.    What types of bikini waxes are available?

There are some differences.  Here are the most popular in spas and beauty studios:

Bikini Line/Regular Bikini: Removes any hair outside the underwear. This is a very conservative style.

Extreme Bikini/ Sexy Bikini/ Full Bikini Wax: It removes more than the bikini line; from the outer labia and some hair at the top to leave a more defined triangle. It doesn’t include your behind.  This is a great option if you are not yet ready for a Brazilian Wax.

Hollywood Bikini/ French Bikini: This Bikini is between the Brazilian and the Extreme or Sexy Bikini, but it goes all the way to the back. Very close to a Brazilian wax, but leaving some hair in the outer labia.

Brazilian Wax:  All the pubic hair is removed, leaving a narrow strip or a tiny triangle in the front. It also removes the hair from the back.  It is perfect if you wear thongs.

Bare Bikini/ Sphinx Bikini: All the hair gone! Including buttocks.

Note: Even if you don’t get a Brazilian or a Bare Bikini wax, you can always ask your Esthetician to wax the back, if your desire to clean up that area. This would be charged as an add-on to your service.

If you make the decision to get waxed, go to a specialist.  This is a private service in a delicate area and you need to feel really comfortable with your Esthetician. Ask your friends, do your research, and keep all these tips in mind.
